I just wanted to comment a little on the SFA. I know that they aren't that high profile in terms of charities, and some people may not know if their gift to them would be as valuable as giving to another charity.

Stuttering impacts people's lives in an immense way. More children than adults stutter -- (some grow out of it; some don't). We don't know the cause, nor do we have a cure. There are lots of theories, and techniques, and workarounds, but nothing solid. Over 3 million people in the US alone suffer from this condition.

It can be devastating for children.

Imagine if people assumed that you had a mental disability because you stumbled over your words.

Imagine if you had great things to say (in class, at a party, with friends), and simply were unable to say them.

Imagine if you were called on in class to answer a question and you knew the answer, but couldn't get it out. And the teacher chastised you for not studying. Or the other kids made fun of you.

Imagine if you were afraid to answer the phone because you worried that when you tried to say "hello" you would be unable to.

Imagine if you were afraid to make phone calls because when you went to speak, you had a block and the person on the other end of the line hung up before you got the words out.

Imagine if people assumed you were nervous or stupid because you were stammering.

Imagine if you avoided social situations, or having friends, or missed out on your dream job, because you didn't know when you might have trouble speaking.

Many children who have brilliant minds never realize their full potential because of this condition.

You might be surprised at the number of actors and TV personalities who stutter. One technique that seems to work for some who stutter is to train their voice to speak differently. Acting tends to work well for this. Some people who stutter(ed) who you may have heard of include Marilyn Monroe, James Earl Jones, Winston Churchill, and Carly Simon. (This, obviously, is a very condensed list).

Because of organizations like the SFA, awareness has grown. Research has increased. New method of dealing with this condition have been found. Parents and teachers are more often armed with the information they need to support children. People who stutter have become better equipped at dealing with both the physical obstacles that stuttering brings, as well as the emotional trauma.
