A Day Off With Nicholas Brendon

Star: The Celebrity Magazine
April 10-23, 2001

Working on a TV show as popular as Buffy definitely keeps Nicholas Brendon -- who plays Xander -- busy. But when he gets a second to himself, he likes nothing more than pottering around his glamorous LA pad and creating the perfect love nest for himself and girlfriend, actress Tressa DiFiglia. A self-confessed DIY obsessive, Nick has been making alterations to his new home and is also planning an extended holiday in Europe. He chills out with star* and reveals why he's just a regular guy at heart.

Q: What do you do on your days off?
A: I spend most of my spare time with Tressa. We work out, go to movies, the beach or just hang out in the house and have awesome conversations -- and we have a pool, which is great!

Q: Do you ever have a big lie-in?
A: I usually sleep until about 10 or 11 a.m., then I think, "Well, I guess I should get up now ..." Then I make a cup of coffee for me and the girl, and we talk about our plans for the day.

Q: How's your new home?
A: Once we'd settled in properly, it became a really nice place to entertain and socialise. We've got a spare bedroom so people always stay over -- it's a bit like a little hotel! It's a great way for me to see more of my friends. We have some sort of party once a month or so!

Q: Are there any drawbacks to living in Hollywood?
A: Well, it's raining today. The spell has been broken, after 89 days of drought. I've lived in LA my whole life so I don't really know any different. I love my Dodgers [local baseball team], and the weather's fantastic. When we eventually have kids, though, I don't know if I'd want to raise them in Los Angeles.

Q: Does Tressa come along to baseball games with you?
A: Oh yeah, and she digs it! Before we met, she didn't know anything about baseball, but now she does and she could probably go on some sort of sports genius programme.

Q: Do you count the cast of Buffy as good friends?
A: When you're spending that much time together, how can you fail to be? Tony [who plays Rupert Giles] and I have always got on really well. We all hang out together outside work -- we're all team players and I love every one of 'em, although I do get sick of them sometimes! We've been together for five years now so it's just like having loads of brothers and sisters.

Q: Have things changed since Angel and Cordelia left the show?
A: Yeah, it's all about different personalities -- every time someone new arrives or someone else leaves, it changes the dynamic of the cast. It reminds me of my own family life -- when my parents divorced and my mom remarried, everything changed. But you forge through -- you have to.

Q: Have you made any sacrifices for your success?
A: I have good and bad days, but I don't think I've ever really made any sacrifices. I still go out and do my 'normal Nicky' stuff. If I'm recognised, then I'll sign autographs. I won't go to places where you know you'll have a kid coming up to you every five minutes, though.

Q: Are you overwhelmed by the success of Buffy?
A: When the show first hit the air, there were times I would think, "Wow!" Nobody can prepare you for being recognised in the street -- there are no classes for that!
